1. What Are Cookies?
Cookies are small text files that a website places on your device (computer, phone, tablet) when you visit it. They let the site remember information about your visit — for example, that you're logged in, what page you were reading, or that you already dismissed a cookie banner. Similar technologies include local storage, session storage, pixels, and web beacons; where we use them, we treat them the same as cookies in this policy.
Cookies are either first-party (set by us directly) or third-party (set by a service we use, like an analytics provider). They can also be session cookies (deleted when you close your browser) or persistent cookies (stored for a defined period).
2. Types of Cookies We Use
We use as few cookies as possible. Everything falls into one of three categories:
- Strictly necessary — required for the site to function: security, load balancing, and remembering that you dismissed a cookie banner. These are always on and cannot be disabled.
- Analytics — help us understand which content is useful, which pages have issues, and how developers navigate the site. We use privacy-first analytics that don't track you across other sites.
- Functional — remember your preferences (e.g., theme, code language default) between visits.
We do not use advertising cookies. We do not participate in ad networks. We do not sell or share cookie data.

4. Third-Party Cookies
Some pages embed content from third-party services (e.g., YouTube videos in blog posts, Giscus comments, Discord invite widgets). When you interact with these embeds, the third party may set its own cookies subject to its own privacy and cookie policies. We list the main third parties in our Privacy Policy.
To minimize third-party cookies, we use privacy-enhancing embeds (e.g., youtube-nocookie.com) wherever possible.
5. Managing Cookies
You have several ways to control cookies:
- Our banner — on your first visit, a banner lets you accept or reject non-essential cookies. You can change your choice any time via the "Cookie settings" link in the footer.
- Your browser — all modern browsers let you block, delete, or restrict cookies. Note that blocking strictly-necessary cookies may break parts of the site.
- Privacy tools — extensions like uBlock Origin, Privacy Badger, or built-in tracking protection give you finer control.

6. Do Not Track
Some browsers send a "Do Not Track" (DNT) signal. There is no widely accepted standard for how sites should respond. We treat DNT as a signal to disable non-essential analytics and load only the minimum necessary cookies. Global Privacy Control (GPC) signals are treated the same way.
7. Changes to This Policy
If we add or change cookies, we update this page and the "Last updated" date at the top. For material changes we may also re-prompt for consent.
